How to structure a poem

Take the beginning,

the opening line,

and put that first –

it seems to need attention,

as it has a morbid thirst

to be in there at the start.

Then, place the body of work…

in the middle,

it need not shirk away

from what it has to do,

from what it has to say.

The ending could come

as something of a surprise,

but, convention dictates,

and we write down convention’s words

as if they were our own –

so, best to keep the end

at the end.

THE END
