“I’m Poetry Clean!”

I’m Poetry Clean! I have been for ages; reading or writing pages of verse was getting worse for me; I was to be found hanging around the ‘Poetry’ section in public libraries; and sneakily perusing Poe and Keats at bus stops.

After treatment, which consisted of hours of cold showers, I was certified ‘clean’, and I have been ever since.

Now, even just seeing a poetry book will make me wince.

I think I am cured, and my poetry past remains obscured to those that know me – it’s just not for me to become all poemy; so, you’ll know what I mean, when I say: “Keep it Poetry Clean!”

–///–

Or, as a poem.

“I’m Poetry Clean!”

I have been for ages;

Reading or writing pages of verse

Was getting worse for me;

I was to be found

Hanging around the ‘Poetry’ section in public libraries;

And sneakily perusing Poe and Keats at bus stops;

After treatment, which consisted of hours of cold showers.

I was certified ‘clean’

And I have been ever since;

Now, even just seeing a poetry book will make me wince.

I think I am cured

And my poetry past remains obscured to those that know me –

It’s just not good for me to become all poemy.

So, you’ll know what I mean

When I say:

“Keep it Poetry Clean!”
