Green Avert!

She was green with envy

Green with verdigris

Green as in my salad days

When I was as green as she;

She ate her greens

And joined the greens

And ate only green smarties

Of which there are none.

Green Eggs and Ham

Were not her thing;

And green were the colour

Of the eyes looking out and from within.

‘Green and bear it!’

She’d say, with a smile;

Whereupon people noticed the spinach stuck between her teeth and walked past single file

To get a glimpse of her

And her vert legume de faux pas;

Then she married a greengrocer

And became all la-di-da.
But, that was long ago

And far away

And I no longer see her

Five-times-a-day.
