Ode to Okehampton, West Devon.

Ode to Okehampton

Oh, Kehampton

In Devon’s fair county thou liest

Tho I tell the truth

I never visited in my youth

And certainly not in yours

You are set not upon some foreign shores

But, near to The A Three

Oh, Kehampton,

With Castle ruins

Thou art found

Of ancient stock it looks around

Though less and less is found

Above ground

These days.
O, Kehampton,

Thou live, as ever, upon the edge…

Of Dartemoor;

And, unless one or t’other

Of you leaves,

Shall do so forever more.

Oh, Kehampton

Next the River Ock

Or Ockment

Where woolen trade came…

And went.
