Just another day in the life-drawing class

USA. East Hampton, New York. 1983.

Looks like I’ve drawn the short straw
But I can’t draw
and it doesn’t look like a straw!

Let me set the scene…
I was in a life drawing class
And sketching places were either blessed with a clear view
Or damned with an obstructed view (though they called it ‘restricted’)
I drew the shortest of short straws (I had gone there to draw still life)
And managed to use charcoal sticks to the number three
In catching the roof-supporting joist stretched out before me
I don’t know if the sitter was man or woman
As I could only just make out the leg

Of a chaise long
This I drew all wrong
Next time, they said, I could have a seat with a better view
And not to bother bringing brush, chalk or the like
As ‘I’ could take up position on the chaise long
I told them to get on their bike!
